Update... Will remove the head to get to the cylinder block so I can take a proper look at the damage. Stripped out quite a bit already (need new water pump already), so I may as well carry on a bit deeper. Hoping that it's just a rusty block (water + time = rust). If it reveals itself to be too serious, there are a few options available (through members of this forum I am happy to say), whereby a spare cab could be made available as a donor car.So far thanks to you all for your help.
I'll keep you up to speed on how things pan out.
One question... How does one activate email notifications for new private messages or replies to answered threads?
Thanks again.
Kent for Pezenas online - Hoping to have a taxi running for this summer. What a great way to promote a town in the South of France

The "Messagerie priv?e" should flash when you're on the opening page (Accueil), indicating you've received answers or new messages. I don't think there are email notifications...

I am now ready to try and turn the crank to release the engine. But, I need to know the size of the crank axel bolt just behind the radiator (below the water pump). I suspect it is 40mm but I don't have a micrometer to measure exact.
My question: For the Nissan engine TD27 from 1994, is that a 40mm socket (douille)?
I think I may have found one on Le Bon Coin but don't want to order it until I am certain.
Thanks again all/
Kent.

In ANY CASE, you must NEVER try to turn a seized engine by its crankshaft, unless you wish to get further damage ...
I saved many and various seized engines in my career, ALWAYS by removing the head first, and taking pistons out one by one.
In some cases, I even put the old head gasket back, with perfect result (don't try this on a Diesel) ...
If you can remove any piston from the block, you'll instantly know the reason why it has seized (overheating, no oil, etc).
If pistons still look in shape and cylinders look correct, you can probably clean all parts and put everything back, with motor oil and new rings.
This way will divide your effort by 4, and allow you to hit directly your pistons in the right direction to get them out.
The torque you should apply on the crankshaft to do the same x4 simply means it's own destruction, and possibly the same with connecting rods.
Thanks for your attention / TaxicaB

Thanks for that. I might be looking into buying a whole new taxi from England. I think it's going to be the better choice.
That's exactly what I'd do - you don't need a courier and your engine is carried on its own wheels, with a lot of extra spares!
